Samsung SyncMaster 743BX 17-inch LCD Monitor Review


Arrived with no bad pixels (a good start, anyway). The unmounted pedestal attaches easily, once you figure it out — not very intuitive, though. The mounting arm is collapsed in the box; it pops to its extended position quite aggressively after you remove the locking pin (keep the pin! You’ll never get this dude back inside its box without it). The menu’s touch-sensitive controls are invisible in the kind of subdued lighting in which most PC monitors should be used. But most people use them in bright office or home lighting best suited for football stadiums; the controls are easier to see in such light, but proper image adjustment isn’t possible. I used a penlight to spot the menu buttons while calibrating the 743BX in subdued light. The supplied CD has the monitor driver and calibration software. The software relies on the miserably poor ability of most humans to judge color accuracy and contrast levels by eye. I calibrated the 743BX with iMatch/EyeOne software, the only way to do it. Out of the box, the monitor is 400% too bright, highlights are yellow, blacks are red, colors are oversaturated, and the midtones are magenta to the point of making grays and monochrome images look purple. The color temp ranges from 5300 in flesh tones the color of Sunkist orange juice to over 8000K in the brights despite yellowy highlights. These factory-set effects appear to impress most buyers, who prefer a juiced-up and overly sharp image, and who’ll accept anything that makes Aunt Tillie at least nominally recognizable in family photos, even if the offbeat colors and hot brights have her looking like Mr. Hyde in drag. After half an hour with EyeOne calibration, brightness was reset from 380 to a more natural 122. With a smoother grayscale the gamma simmered down to a close-to-spec 2.24 and a color temp of 6470. A 20-step grayscale actually displayed most of the gray bars as fairly neutral gray — a rare feat for an LCD in this price range. Note that the RGB controls can’t be used to correct the grayscale, as they appear to affect Y-level (saturation) only. The measured contrast range worked out to a decent 735:1, average for competent HDTV’s. As usual, the claimed 7000:1 works only if you view this monitor turned off in a completely dark vacuum and then turn it on to its highest brightness and contrast levels. In use, text at all sizes is sharp and solid. The viewing angles are visibly wider than with older models. For an LCD the calibrated image is good enough for video or photo work if you’re careful and know how to use a pixel color sampler. Oddly, I noted lots of movement noise in grainy videos (a problem with all LCD’s), despite the 5ms speed. Considering that this monitor has the inherent innaccuracies common to all LCD’s (it sure ain’t no CRT), and that I’m about 00 too short to buy a studio LCD for precise work, I’d say the 743BX is an excellent buy after calibration.

I got this to use as a second monitor for my 20″ aluminum iMac. Didn’t have the room or need for another widescreen monitor. Fits in great. The screen’s physical height is exactly the same as the iMac and the stand lets me raise it to the same level. Pixel height is 26 lines less, but it’s not noticable.

The monitor comes with both a VGA and DVI cable! But for the iMac I needed to get a mini DVI to DVI adaptor from Apple. if you don’t already have one.

Also, I have another PC nearby and was able to hook it to the monitor’s VGA input. There’s a front panel “SOURCE” switch that easily switches between DVI and VGA. That button and the others are “touch” types and can be hard to see in the dark. Also not arranged very logically.

But it’s going to work out very nicely.

I have had my Samsung SyncMaster 743 17″ LCD monitor for three weeks. The monitor is great. I like the adjustable movements and the price. The monitor picture is also very good. I would play games using my old monitor and could not see the clues or picture very well. This monitor allows me to see all the cludes and/or pictures excellent. It was very easy to install, even for an “old lady”. I highly recommend this monitor to anyone that needs or wants an adjustable monitor with a good picture at a reasonable price.

First Kudos to Amazon. I placed my order on a Monday and enrolled for “Amazon Prime Shipping.”
I was promised a delivery of Wed, but to my suprise, it was deliverd the very next day.
Installation was simple just “plug & play”
Samsung supplied both VGA & DVI cables.
The Auto & Menu features on the front of the monitor are very convienient to use
The 2 USB plugs on the stand will be very handy for downloading photos & video.
The height and viewing adjustments are easy to use and the base and center of gravity are very stable. The is no vibration of the screen while typing.
The picture quality is fantastic. It took about an hour of getting used to after using a CRT for the past 5 years.
Now when I power-up I can’t believe my eyes
The only drawback is the Samsung Installation CD. It is geared more for VISTA. Yes the are still some of us out here that are holding onto XP

Our first LCD monitor after years with CRTs. The comment from my usually skeptical wife was “what took you so long?” We are running Windows XP, and use our system mostly for web surfing and for MS Office applications. The monitor was easy to set up and adjust. I did have to load the Driver from the CD tht was supplied, but that went well. The stand is easily adjustable, and the monitor can easily be rotated 90 degrees. The paper documentation is a bit weak, but the CD-based owner manual seems very good. This has certainly been a five-star purchase for us.

I did some research of the product, price – size and resolution and I am
very much satisfied. There are quite a few changes that can be made to the
display because the screen does not have the normal 4:3 (W:H) ratio. Also
the color can be changed lighter or darker.
All in all a very good product.

Cons: The lettering on the lower frame for the different display changes
is nearly impossible to see and the screen must be shut down to see where
to touch the frame for display changes.

Samsung P2370HD 23-Inch Full 1080p HDTV LCD Monitor – Black Rose Review


I bought this 1080p TV/Monitor 2 months ago, and it has performed extremely well.

I have a PS3, so i first used it to play games and watch TV Series.

Be careful to pick your cables when connecting this monitor. For example, the very first time i played on my PS3, things didn’t look good at all. I was using an HDMI/HDMI cable. The colors were very bright, and the image was just so off.. but ridiculously off. I was shocked that it produced such a lame picture quality. I grabbed the instructions, and tried to calibrate it, thinking that maybe playing with it a bit would achieve a better picture… and i was never able to adjust it to something decent. I was even thinking of returning it.

BUT then i remembered i had an HDMI/DVI cable lying around somewhere. I hooked it up, and wow, what a difference. No longer did the image look super bright, nor did the colors appear off. Everything looked perfect. I have used that cable ever since. But that means that you need external speakers for the sound.. although i don’t know if there’s another cable that can help you produce the sound from the tv.

I also have a Macbook Pro and i’m using it with the Monitor right now as i type. I am using the same HDMI/DVI cable from my PS3. The first time i connected my Macbook to the monitor, the quality of the image didn’t come out as nice as looking directly to my Macbook’s screen, but then i discovered something out… i closed the laptop’s lid, the image would “reset”, and everything looked super crisp. With the lid open, the image would not fill the whole screen, and everything looked distorted, or blurry. I was so relieved to see the drastic change with the lid closed :)

So there you have it.. a little disappointed at first, but then it turned out perfect. Many people would have returned it within just 5 mins of use.

This TV/Monitor also has a lot of options for adjusting stuff.. every port has different options. For example, when i plug in my Macbook, and turn on the Settings with the Remote, i get “Modes” such as TEXT, INTERNET, ENTERTAINMENT, DYNAMIC CONTRAST.. when i plug in my PS3, i get stuff like MOVIE mode, etc.

Sound is OK i guess.. i almost never use the TV’s sound, because i have external speakers. I used it once while i connected the monitor to watch normal TV.

I would recommend this TV/Monitor if you get the HDMI/DVI cable.

I found this product very cheap on amazon as a refurb, and it was a deal I could not pass up. I bought it, and have been nothing but impressed. I run two monitors on my computer, this Samsung, and an Acer 21″ 1600×900. I use the samsung as my primary, and it’s really nice because whenever I want to watch tv, I just move what i’m working on to my other monitor and watch cable tv through it. I love it. Very bright, excellent colors, looks classy, hd, what more could you ask for?

Pretty much useless as a monitor. Colors are just flat out wrong and guess what if you move side to side or up and down it changes tune how spooky and its not even Halloween yet. Made out of 100% cheap plastic, maybe its good as a TV but not a monitor unless you really are desperate and need a cheap one either way try the 20inch range at 23 inches the screen is way too huge.

Samsung T200HD 20-inch Touch of Color LCD HDTV Widescreen Monitor Review


I originally purchased this monitor as an external monitor for a MacBook Pro, but I am now also using it daily as an HDTV. As a computer monitor, it is not quite as crisp and sharp as the MacBook’s LCD, but that is not surprising, due to the extremely high quality of Apple LCDs. Likely the only way to match the quality of the MacBook LCD is to purchase an Apple Cinema Display ($$$).

As a computer monitor, I have been very happy (using DVI connection).

As a bonus, this monitor included a built-in HDTV tuner, so I plugged in some old rabbit ears and started watching OTA HDTV. Wow!

The speakers are a bit weak, so I sometimes plug in my external computer speakers to the TV’s headphones jack.

Because I was enjoying the HDTV so much, I finally connected a DirecTV HD DVR (HR22) to this TV, and now it can get all of my channels, not just OTA. The DVR connects via HDMI, and the quality is excellent.

This TV’s remote is also nice and simple and easy to use.

The onscreen menus are crisp and easy to understand.

I really only have 2 complaints about this monitor: (1) speakers are weak (but to be expected in a monitor this small), and (2) it attracts dust like crazy!

I highly recommend this monitor either as a computer monitor or an HDTV – or both!

Update: it’s been about 3 months since my original review, so this is just a follow-up post confirming that I am still highly impressed with this monitor, and friends and family have even commented how crisp it is (for HDTV viewing). Also, if you have a problem with the weak speakers, you can just plug in your computer speakers to the monitor. When I am using it to watch TV, I just disconnect my speakers from my MacBook Pro and plug them into the monitor. Late at night, then the TV speakers are fine.

Its perfect what more can i say… but the SRS sound feature, not sure how that works, if i need a speaker system that uses it or not cuz it does not work on its own it says when i push the button on the remote “Not Available” so yah, check that out b4 u order one… but its 1080p and its an awesome tv… though when you go lower than it the top of it gets dark which sucks, as it does not support that feature which i cant remember what its called right now but overall its great
